Rastafarianism arrived in Grenada in the early 1970s, echoing a broader cultural wave throughout the Caribbean. Although initially a fringe movement, Rastafarians’ focus on social justice and self-reliance resonated with Grenadians yearning for change. This led to their increased visibility, culminating in over a third of the People’s Liberation Army during the 1979 revolution being Rastafarian. Their influence waned with the subsequent political turmoil, but their cultural and spiritual contributions remain, as does their advocacy for social justice and cannabis legalization, shaping Grenada’s identity today.
